Care Instructions

Thank you for choosing a hand made Nautical Boards Serving Tray, Carving or Cutting board.  Each board is crafted from domestic and exotic hardwood species, including hard maple and sapele wood.  Boards are built using waterproof glue for maximum strength and longevity, and finished glass-smooth.  Board cleats (handles) are solid marine-grade stainless steel, fastened with stainless screws, bedded using waterproof polyurethane glue.

Board Care

When possible, avoid allowing moisture of any type to stand on the board for long periods of time, and avoid washing with harsh detergents of any type.  Boards should never be placed in the dishwasher.

All boards are finished with multiple coats of Howard Butcher Block Conditioner, (available at Home Depot) a product that is made up of a combination of food grade mineral oil and naturally water-resistant beeswax and carnauba wax.  This product is specially formulated for wood care which prevents drying and cracking, and its naturally antibacterial waxes help repair knife marks and protect the wood by keeping the mineral oil in and the moisture out.  This product also exceeds U.S. FDA regulations for direct and indirect contact with food.

Oiling Instructions

New boards should be treated once every 1-2 months for the first year, depending on usage, then as necessary each year thereafter with Howard Butcher Block Conditioner or food-grade mineral oil, available at gourmet cooking/kitchen stores or pharmacies.  Boards should be treated depending on the frequency of washing, as rinsing with soap and water will eventually remove the oils in the wood.  This could be as often as every few weeks or several months.  Apply conditioner or oil liberally, and rub into the wood with a clean cloth or paper towel.  Stand the board on end so each side is saturated, re-oiling until the wood does not absorb any more oil, and wipe off any excess.

Stains

In the event that the board is stained and regular washing will not help, try sprinkling regular table salt over the surface of the board, and rubbing it with a sliced lemon.  Rinse well with hot water.  Re-oil after removing any stains.
